We are a group of concerned citizens, residents of Saint Simons Island, who care about the future of the island and want to do something to protect this wonderful place we call home.

Whether or not you agree that a municipality is a good idea,

we should be able to vote on it.

Why a Municipality:

(For more Municipality information, hover the cursor over "A Municipality" above and click a drop down title.)

  • No alternatives:

    • The county Board of Commissioners (BOC) does not want to relinquish control of the island’s zoning process for various reasons and have blocked or removed all available alternatives to an island municipality.

    • Almost 20 years ago the BOC created the Island Planning Commission (IPC) with powers to decide on preliminary plat approval.  This was a compromise instead of creating a municipality at the time.  The BOC remove these powers from the IPC in 2018.

    • Attempts to create a "Township," which our legislators have suggested could substitute for an island municipality, are not allowed in the state of Georgia.

    • Our Board of Commissioners and some of our legislators feel that the county has done such a good job of managing the development of the entire county that they should consolidate control of all county development including the city of Brunswick.

    • With our vote only representing 1/7th of the vote in the county, we are unable to change the makeup and attitudes of the BOC

    • If we wish to manage the future character of the island, the only option left open to us is to become a municipality.

For island residents to control island development, our Ga. State Senate and House Representatives will need to present and pass a bill at the state level, subject to our later vote, creating an island municipality.

Not until they do this can we vote on whether or not we are willing to take on this responsibility.
